EU citizens do not require a residence permit or work permit in Germany. The so-called eastward- extension countries: Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Estonia and Latvia are still an exception. Students from these countries must apply for a work permit from the Employment Agency, but this is only a formality. Citizens of the following countries outside the European Union (EU) can enter without a visa, but must obtain a residence permit: Switzerland, USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Israel.
People of other nationalities than those mentioned above require a visa to enter Germany. Depending on the country, obtaining a visa can be difficult. In most countries the waiting time is about 6 – 8 weeks. The visa will then initially include a three-month temporary residence permit for Germany and the European Union, which will be extended to one year. If necessary, it can be extended for another year. In addition, there is an annual work permit of 90 full (8 hours/day) or 180 half days (4 hours/day).
There are fees of 50 Euro for issuing the residence permit, an extension costs another 50 Euro.
